Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado
The Rocky Mountain Research and Prevention Institute has operated as a support system for several startup nonprofit organizations in the metropolitan-Denver region. RMRPI provides these organizations with the resources they need to develop skills and build their capacity and effectiveness.
The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado (SPCC) is a coalition of agencies, organizations and individuals who are working in the areas of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention in the state of Colorado.
NONPROFIT INCUBATION
RMRPI served as a nonprofit incubator for SPCC, providing the following services for the Coalition until the group was ready to apply for its own 501(c)3 status):
- Fiduciary Sponsorship
- Strategic Planning
- Marketing Consultating and Implementation
- Administrative services (meeting planning, event organization)
- Website Authorship and design
- Print Collateral Design
- Human Resource Services (Structuring new position and hiring for the role)
HISTORY
After ten years in existence, SPCC was at a turning point in the organization's structure and mission. The partnership between SPCC and RMRPI was originally forged due the Coalition's need for a new fiscal sponsor. Many of SPCC's member
organizations are 501(3)(c) organizations, but the Coalition itself did not have non-profit status. RMRPI became the fiduciary sponsor for SPCC to allow the Coalition to continue its non-profit fundraising and programs.
Soon SPCC found themselves needing to formulate a new plan for the future. RMRPI located a professional planner and marketing consultant who led SPCC through an comprehensive strategic planning process. During this process, the Coalition recognized the need for a new website design, new marketing collateral and a staffing change. RMRPI located a marketing professional who created a new SPCC website and
worked with the Coalition to create a new membership structure and brochure.
Finally, RMRPI located and screened over 100 candidates for the newly created position of SPCC's Campaign Coordinator. The result of the exhaustive search was the hiring of a new Coordinator who has helped the organization continue to focus and grow.
THE FUTURE
After 5 years together, in 2015, SPCC was ready to launch from RMRPI's incubator and become its own 501(c) nonprofit organization. RMRPI looks forward to following the important work of the Coalition.
